My Marriage Ended-Not with a Bang but a Whimper

For five years, I’ve been living as a single woman. It wasn’t my choice, but it was my reality.

Three days ago, my divorce was finally finalized.

It was the end of an era. Only there wasn’t any fanfare, speeches, or grand sentimental send-offs.

Instead, I received an email from my attorney letting me know the official sealed and certified copy of my divorce judgement would be mine for an additional $25 fee.

Five years. Thousands of dollars in legal fees. Endless hours of emotional turmoil and pain.

And in the end, like all things in life, it all comes down to mundane paperwork.

Talk about a whimper, not a bang.

It took me six months to remove my wedding ring after my husband walked out to start a new life without me. Still in shock, I had moved into a new home by the beach. Each morning, I looked out at the ocean in the distance, and I imagined tossing the ring into the sea so I’d never have to look at it again.

Alas, there would be no grand, dramatic gesture.

Instead, I gently slipped the ring off and placed it into my jewelry box. The wedding ring, after all, was not the offender in this story. It had been a symbol of love, commitment, and promise. And for 25…
