An Open Letter to a ‘Sad’ Harvey Weinstein

It’s Time for Unrepentant Bullies and Predators with Deep Pockets to Become Extinct

“I don’t know what to say. With some [people I considered close friends], it saddens me. I have lost my wife and kids, whom I love more than anything else.” (Harvey Weinstein, October 2017)

Dear Harvey,

I hear you are sad that your Hollywood ‘friends’ have turned on you. Your wife also quickly got out of dodge after learning she was married to a serial sexual predator.

What did you think was going to happen? Did you think your stature as a bonafide celebrity movie mogul was going to let you get away with it?

Harvey, you know what makes me sad? Well, other than the fact that over 60 million people voted for a serial sexual predator to the highest office in this country? YOU, you make me sad. You also make me angry and disgusted. It saddens me that you derailed countless dreams, destroyed numerous women’s careers, and undermined their psychological well-being.

But most of all, it saddens me that you are not the first, nor the last of this particular hideous beast we will have to slay.

Harvey, it saddens me that for decades you used your power to degrade, humiliate, assault, and threaten young women who were vulnerable and just looking to work in a field they loved.

These women had lifelong dreams they were pursuing with passion. And you? You took that from them.

Perhaps you should stop feeling sorry for yourself and look in the mirror. You could have been a good person — a good boss, a good mentor, a good father, a good husband, a good friend, a good man. Instead, you became intoxicated on your own power in a town that glorified you for making money. It was there where you found your utopia — a business and town that allowed you to treat people like shit, as long as you kept making them money.

You are a disgrace, and that is why people are shunning you. BUT YOU CAUSED THIS. This is all on you. Instead of being sad for yourself, BE SAD for those you tortured and hurt.

You don’t deserve compassion or empathy or even a second chance, but you know what, Harvey? I actually do feel sorry for you. I wonder what happened to you in your childhood that turned you into such a monster?

What made you grow up thinking that women needed to be punished or humiliated?

Who humiliated you in such a way that you could only see women as sexual objects/conquests and not as actual human beings with thoughts and dreams all their own?

You could have had it all, Harvey, and for a while, maybe you did. And now?

You are a pariah in an industry that actually thrives on dirty secrets, makes room for systemic misogyny and discrimination, and forgives all types of nasty pariahs — including domestic abusers, rapists, and other types of pond scum.

Harvey, you were never above the law. You got away with your crimes for way too long because you are an unrepentant bully with deep pockets who could buy silence and destroy careers.

Maybe it was fun for you while it lasted, but you now must reap what you sow.

You have to live with the infamy of being a footnote in history as the MOST FAMOUS CELEBRITY MOVIE MOGUL TO BE OUTED AS A SERIAL SEXUAL PREDATOR.

Is this the legacy you wanted to leave your five children? Is this the tribute you wanted to pay to your adoring parents, Mira and Max?

Go deep, Harvey. Get serious help. Deconstruct your bloated sense of self-entitlement and ego. Maybe somewhere in the dark night of your soul, you will find some sort of redemption.

Or maybe not. Life doesn’t always have Hollywood happy endings.

Just don’t expect your “friends” to support you right now. They were never your friends, to begin with. They licked your boots because you were the all-powerful Harvey Weinstein — a cartoon gangster character you played that bullied people and threw his money around to make his mistakes disappear in a cloud of smoke.

And also, remember this — the young women you called up to your room were never attracted to you. They didn’t want to reject their boss or potential boss. Their fear was compounded by confusion and revulsion. They were going to a job interview and you showed up begging for sexual favors.

It doesn’t take a psychotherapist to figure out that you, Harvey Weinstein, can probably only get excited or aroused when you are humiliating or dominating others.

For decades it has been known that you have also invariably treated your employees like trash. You’ve terrorized journalists and competitors and promised to blacklist anyone who went against you or rejected you.

What kind of man treats his friends and co-workers so heinously and then bemoans their lack of loyalty?

At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself WHO IS THE REAL HARVEY WEINSTEIN? Who are you without your power? Without your money? Without your clout? What is your true value to humanity?

So you made a bunch of movies that won awards and made money. So what? In the grand scheme of things, none of that matters if you aren’t a person of courage, conviction, compassion, kindness, generosity, and love.

A creep with money or a creep without money is still a creep.

It SADDENS me that any of this had to happen.

It saddens me that one man helped create so much artistic beauty in the world and also created so much ugliness.

It saddens me that you launched the careers of so many white men, while at the same time squashing the hopes and dreams of so many women.

I’m saddened you’ve offered lame excuses for your actions.

It saddens me that predators like you exist in the world.

It saddens me that so many people enabled or protected you.

It saddens me that you aren’t the only one (and you may not even be the worst) and that this will continue to be ‘business as usual’ as long as we treat women like second-class citizens.

On one point I do agree with you. Harvey, you are a dinosaur.

I just can’t wait for your kind to become extinct for good.

Signed with sadness and disgust,

Lizbeth Finn-Arnold
